The son of an architect-engineer, Aitchison was his father's pupil and then his partner from 1859. He had traveled in Italy with Burges from 1853 to 1855 and his style reflected his Continental experiences - the house and studio for the Academician Lord Leighton is a mixture of Germanic classicism and Moorish style. He was appointed architect and surveyor to the St Katharine's Dock Company in succession to his father; but he was a consummate decorator, his masterpiece being the Berkeley Square house of F. Lehmann, MP, in collaboration with Albert Moore (1873). His drawings for decoration were exhibited at the RIBA in 1898, when he was awarded the Institute's Royal Gold Medal.
