Audsley trained as an architect in Elgin and practised in Liverpool from 1856, where he also made an important contribution to the Art Movement as a publisher of chromolithographic books with his brother, William James Audsley. The first, The Sermon on the Mount (1861), contains a plate by Owen Jones. The Guide to the Art of Illumination (1861) was extremely popular, reaching twelve editions in seven years. Their manuals of ornamental pattern included Outlines of Ornament (1878) and Polychromatic Decoration as Applied to Buildings in the Medieval Styles (London and Paris 1882; and Stuttgart 1883). He published a number of books on Japanese art in the 1870s, and on ornament, including Keramic Art of Japan (1875), and The Practical Decorator and Ornamentist (1892).
