Muthesius studied philosophy and architecture in Berlin, and in 1893 became a Prussian government architect. In 1896 he was appointed to the German Embassy in London; his seminal work, Das Englische Haus (1904-5), was the result of his stay in England. His contemporary, but objective, point of view has been of lasting value. Muthesius was the driving force behind the foundation of the Deutsche Werkbund in 1907. A prolific journalist, he wrote tirelessly on modern design and the need for improvement in industrial art and production.
