Viollet spent much of his time on the restoration of Gothic buildings, but it was through his massive works of architectural scholarship that he exercised a wide influence on his contemporaries and successors. The Dictionnaire Raisonne de l'architecture consisted often volumes (1854-68). The Dictionnaire du mobilier Francais, in six volumes (1858-75), provided designers with models for Gothic furniture. Entretiens sur l'architecture (1863) contained theories of iron construction which influenced Hector Guimard and others involved with the Art Nouveau movement at the turn of the century. He made designs for stained glass executed at Sevres in the 1840s, and in 1849 was commissioned to improve the national manufactories of Sevres, Gobelins and Beauvais.
